Player Review
Jay has tons of potential.  He has a strong leg and gets the ball up quick.  The sky is the limit!  He is going to be an outstanding college K/P.  Great head on this young kids shoulders!  Will have a great career for UNC.

'It's the place I want to be'

Laurinburg (NC) Scotland County kicker Jay Wooten received an offer last Thursday from North Carolina. Today, he accepted that tender and became a Tar Heel.

"I did some thinking and was playing devil's advocate with myself," Wooten said. "I wanted to make sure I was going to the right place. And every time I thought about it, everything kept coming back to North Carolina. It's the place I want to be."

Wooten called North Carolina head coach John Bunting before school this morning.

"I told him I wanted to be a Tar Heel," Wooten said.

As a member of Chris Sailer's 2007 Top 12, Wooten indicated that will be attending Sailer's invitation only Top 12 camp in July in Los Angeles (CA).

Wooten converted 8-of-13 field goals during his junior season. He also kicked 70-percent of his kickoffs for touchbacks.

"I can kick and punt," he said. "I'm going to continue to work hard to be the best player I can be."

Is Wooten firm on his commitment?

"I won't be visiting anywhere else," he said. "I'm firm and straight up."

He's been hitting 60-yard field goals in practice of late.

"When coach Bunting came by last week I hit 2-of-3 from 60 yards," Wooten said. "I've been working on my flexibility. I'm a little taller than most kickers so having good flexibility is important. I'm going to continue to improve and get stronger so my kicks can get deeper."

What's next for Wooten?

"I'm going to go to a few fundamental camps," he said. "I'll definitely be in Chapel Hill since that's my new home now. I'm going to help out any way I can to get some of our boys to join me."

Including perhaps one of UNC's top targets Travian Robertson?

"Travian and I are good friends," Wooten said. "We were hanging out earlier today actually. He has to do what's the best for him, just like I do. Hopefully we can do to the same place and go through the process together. That would make things nice."

Scotland County has been a known pipeline for UNC. Three current Tar Heels – Cameron Sexton, Jacoby Watkins and Hilee Taylor hail from the school.
